1. CALL FOR FILM SUBMISSIONS: LADYFEST SEATTLE 2004!
Send us your work! We want your film and video submissions for the 2004
LadyFest Seattle film program! No submission fee to enter. Shorts and
feature lengths accepted. Deadline is April 15th, 2004. Please read our
mission statement, and downloadable submission form. Mail-in form (and
soon to be available online submission process) can be found on our

2. JUMP TO JAPAN EXHIBIT [Seattle, WA]
exhibit open through June 6
The Seattle Children's Museum features an original exhibit: "Jump to
Japan: Discovering Culture through Popular Art." It features the work of
Hayao Miyazaki, director of anime films such as "My Neighbor Totoro" and
"Spirited Away," and a manga shop replicated on one in Japan. Two
animation stations in the museum allows visitors to try their hand at
animation and manga drawing,and workshops in the Imagination Station will
allow kids to learn more about manga, animation and woodblock printing.

3. BYDESIGN 04 [Seattle, WA]
February 6-8 at The Little Theatre - 608 19th Avenue East
Northwest Film Forum and the American Institute of Graphic Arts team up
once again to present ByDesign. Now in its fourth year, this annual series
explores the intersection of design and moving image arts with special
screenings and events. ByDesign 04 features rarely seen historic films,
new shorts and music videos, a local motion graphics forum, and more. Join
us in celebrating the rich history and exciting new developments of this
convergence of art forms.
HISTORIC SHORTS: Graphic Films of the '60s
(Various directors, 1963-70, 70 min.)

This selection of rarely seen short films from the 1960s shows a variety
of creative techniques in motion graphics, animation, still photography,
and editing which have influenced contemporary work. The program includes
award-winning films by innovative animators and designers such as Saul
Bass, Pablo Ferro, Jan Lenica, and Ernest Pintoff. Program includes: The

SEATTLE MOVES Screening and Discussion

Join some of Seattle's leading motion graphics designers for a screening
of recent work and open discussion about the process, tools, and aesthetic

around the globe to participate in our Entropy program. This year's
program features the premieres of more than a dozen new, innovative shorts

This retrospective of shorts and music videos by London-based collective
Shynola (Gideon Baws, Jason Groves, Chris Harding, and Richard "Kenny"
Kenworthy) includes the animated short THE LITTLEST ROBO, their BLIP
campaign for Radiohead's KID A album, and music videos for Quannum,
Radiohead, Lambchop, Stephen Malkmus, Junior/Senior and others. Location:

EAMES SCIENCE with Scientific American LIVE!
Sunday, February 8 at 8 pm
Charles and Ray Eames are considered one of the most important design
teams of the past century. For this special live event, electronic artist
Scientific American will be revisiting films made by the influential
designers in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. He'll be doing live sequencing of
original electronic music to accompany them. Don't miss this remix of the
Eameses' inventive perspectives on science, technology, history, and

4. THE ANIMATION SHOW OF SHOWS [ Portland, OR]
Wednesday, February 18 @ 5 pm
Animation World Network, ASIFA-Northwest and the Art Institute of Portland
present the 5th annual Animation Show of Shows presented by Ron Diamond.
The event is a showcase of the best animated shorts from the 2003 festival
circuit. This year's presentation includes Domonique Monfre's DESTINO,

7. AN ALTERNATIVE ANIMATION COURSE [Portland, OR]
An Alternative Animation Course

Pacific Northwest College of Art, Portland
Is your animation a little stiff? Does it move too fast? Lack heft? This
may be just the class for you! With a focus on alternative techniques,
this hands-on, low-tech course provides students with experience aimed at
building a gut level understanding making images move. Whether it is
clients, students, or your own visions, that drive you - this course will
enhance your understanding and hone your skills at bringing those little
movies in your head onto the screen. The course will feature guest
animators and a survey of moving image artists. Applications to web based,
hand drawn, stop motion, and 3D animation. Drawing skills nice but not

8. AFTER EFFECTS [Seattle, WA]
Three Mondays, February 9, 16 & 23, 7-10 pm

After Effects is a wonderful program chock full of 2D and 3D compositing,
animation and rendering tools that can be used both for films and
websites. We'll be learning After Effects 6, creating layers of animations
in both 2D and basic 3D, compositing them, animating lights and cameras,
and building composited animations. We'll learn how to create texts,
titles, working with imported footage, and how to output all of this to

9. AFTER EFFECTS I [Seattle, WA]

Instructor - James Culbertson
Adobe After Effects enables you to produce professional-quality motion
graphics, special effects, title sequences, and animation for integration
into your projects. In these workshops, you will learn to combine video,
audio, still-images, and animations, into simple or complex layered
compositions that can then be output to any film, video, multimedia, or
internet resolution. The skills learned in these classes will help you
take your work to new creative levels. Media will be provided. Class
participants will complete a series of short, simple After Effects tasks
and tutorials. We will cover basic manipulation and animation of transform
controls, masks, basic filter effects, and fully explore spatial and
temporal keyframe control over these animating properties (including speed
and acceleration, bezier curves, keyframe velocity and influence, and
keyframe assistants). Other topics include: media import and render output
methods and options, media editing, interface switches and controls,
efficient working strategies, layer mattes and layer modes, and key

11. AMAZING ANIMATION @ THE CHILDRENS MUSEUM [Seattle, WA]
April 5-9, 10am-1pm

Ages: 7-10 years old
Cost: $150 per child (all art supplies, snack)
Move over, Totoro... Make way for kid-toons! In this intense hands-on
workshop, kids will make their own cartoon movies using clay, drawings and
cut paper. Filming with professional animation equipment, students will
animate, or "breathe life" into original characters and stories from their
imaginations, frame by frame on digital video. After the workshop, each
student will keep their artwork and get a copy of the video (in a box they
design) featuring all of the films made in the class. More info:

19. Tender Bodies, An Evening with James Duesing [OLYMPIA, WA]
Date: Friday, February 27, 2004
Place: Recital Hall, Communications Building, The Evergreen State College

(360) 867 6833 James Duesing is an associate professor in computer
animation at Carnegie Mellon University. Duesing will screen his latest
work, Tender Bodies, as well as earlier works, including, Cultural
Tourism, Law of Averages, and Maxwell's Demon. Screenings will be followed
by discussions with the animator and video artist. Duesing has drawn
inspiration from underground comics, contemporary art, Warner Brothers'
cartoons and literature, to produce three of his works, visually complex
animation projects exploring the relationship between characters and their
environment. Duesing makes work that lives in the surreal landscape of the
mind, employing all sorts of fantastic creatures to perform everyday
conversations about dating and monologues on loneliness. His work has been
shown in hundreds of international festivals and exhibitions, and
televised throughout Europe, Asia, Australia, and the United States. He's
received numerous grants and awards, including the National Endowment for
the Arts Individual Media Grant, an American Film Institute Fellowship, an
Emmy Award, the Deutscher Videokunstpreis, and a CINE Golden Eagle. His
work graces several public collections, including the Museum of Modern Art
in New York, the Goethe Memorial Museum in Tokyo, the Israel Museum, and
the UCLA Film Archive.
20. Karen Lewis Studio Open House [SEATTLE]

22. MOVEMENT IN THE VISUAL ARTS [VANCOUVER, BC]

a six-week course on creating visual art
that is sourced from the experience of movement
offered through Continuing Studies
at Emily Carr Institute

Tuesday evenings, 6:30 - 9:30pm

This course involves you in movement exploration and dance improvisation
towards creating visual art that is sourced from the experience of
movement. The course provides a safe and supportive environment from which
to explore the body in movement, as well as a framework for exploring the
link between kinesthetic perception and visual media. You will create work
in your media of choice using your own resources. Projects may range from
drawing, painting, photography, and sculpture to video or performance.
$295/Class Limit 12
Prerequisite Students must have the ability to work independently on
self-directed projects; instruction does not include media-specific
techniques
Instructor Bios
Helen Walkley is an independent performer, choreographer, improviser, and
teacher. She is also a certified Laban Movement Analyst and holds an MFA
in Interdisciplinary Studies from SFU. Since 1980 she has performed and
taught extensively throughout Canada, Europe, and the US. In 2002-03 she
was an Artist in Residence at the Dance Centre.
Leslie Bishko is an experimental animator and animation faculty at ECIAD.
Her work combines abstraction and symbolism, exploring themes of rhythm,
pattern, and the relationship of sound and image. She is certified as a
Laban Movement Analyst and brings this rich theory of movement to her work
and teaching.
