1. CALL FOR ENTRIES: FLIPBOOK CONTEST
Seattle Flip Books now accepting submissions to Seattle's First Annual
City-Wide Flip Book Contest. Flip Books must be hand rendered for
consideration in the three contest categories; Most Artistic Flip Book,
Funniest Flip Book, and Best Flip Book. Prizes from several local
establishments, and all accepted entries are featured in the documentary
film about the making of the contest and get a free DVD copy of the film.
Film premieres and Winners announced at the Fremont Outdoor Movies July
31st. Deadline for submissions is July 5, 2004. Send flip books and $15

2. CALL FOR ENTRIES: PORTLAND INDY ANIMATION FEST
Deadline: July 23rd, 2004. There is no entry fee.
The Portland Indy Animation Festival 2004 is now accepting competitive and
non-competitive entries. The Festival celebrates independent animators
around the world, the more independent and original, the better.
Submissions can include all aspects of animation including 3D, 2D,
machinima, stop motion, filmed puppetry (in all its forms),
animatedtrailers for works in progress and interpretations of the art of
animation. Format of submissions (which are final) must be provided on one
of the following: DVD, SVCD, VCD, VHS (PAL/SECAM/NTSC), miniDV, SWF
(Flash) or mpeg2. The Festival will take place at several venues 11th -
14th August 2004 in Portland, Oregon, USA. Entries submitted for the
competition will be evaluated by judges and the audience. There will be
awards handed out to those present on the last day of the festival. More

3. FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITY: RAC MEDIA ARTIST
The Regional Arts & Culture Council is seeking applicants and nominations
for its Individual Artist Fellowships - grants of $20,000 each to be
awarded to two artists annually. For FY 2004-05, RACC intends to award one
fellowship to a literary artist and one fellowship to a media artist.
Eligible for the fellowships are artists who currently reside in
Clackamas, Multnomah or Washington counties, who have been in working
practice in their discipline for a minimum of 10 years and are recognized
as a professional artist by their peers. Additional eligibility criteria
apply. Artists do not need to be nominated, they can apply directly.
Applications must be in the RACC office no later than 5pm Monday, July
26, 2004. This is not a postmark deadline. Guidelines and applications are

4. BILL PLYMPTON MASTER ANIMATION CLASS [Portland, OR]
Date TBD, planning for August 2004
The quintessential indie animator, the master of cartoon hilarity and
Northwest native Bill Plympton is coming to Portland to show off his new
feature film "Hair High," and give a day-long intensive masterclass in
which he will demonstrate his drawing techniques. Location: TBD More info:

6. MIXED-MEDIA ANIMATION INTENSIVES WEEKEND [Seattle, WA]

Animation I
In this intensive one-day workshop, you will learn all about the
fine art of frame-by-frame filmmaking in our Hands-On Animation
Lab using our Video Lunchbox system. We will explore various
animation techniques, including cameraless animation, drawing on
film, flipbooks, stop-motion, pixelation and rotoscoping. Bring
a bag lunch to eat while we enjoy a screening of animated films
that will introduce you to the fascinating history of animation.
After taking this course you will be certified to rent time in
our animation studio to work on your independent animation
projects. Class limit: 8

Animation II
This class takes off where Animation I ends, delving into additional
features of the Video Lunchbox system and exploring advanced animation
techniques. The course will cover the use of audio for lip-synch dialogue
and animation timed to music and alternative animation techniques such as
multi-plane, replacement, sand, paint-on-glass and time-lapse. Bring a bag
lunch to eat while we enjoy a screening of animated films that will
highlight the course content as well as make parallels between mixed-media
and digital animation. Prerequisites: Animation I. Class limit: 8

9. COYOTE ANIMATION [Seattle, WA]
Coyote Junior High and 911 Media Arts offer the Coyote Animation
Workshop several times per year. These on-going Saturday-morning
workshops are for young animators ages 10 and up. Working in 911
Media Arts Center's Hands-On Animation Lab, students produce
personalized animations using drawing, clay, clip-art, sand, found-
objects, stop-motion and more!

10. ANIMATED ADVENTURES SUMMER CAMPS [Bainbridge Island, WA]
For the third year, Animated Adventures is offering animation production
camps on Bainbridge Island. This year 4 classes are being offered through
the Bainbridge Island Parks & Recreation District and held in the

CLAYMATION (ages 10 and up/grades 5-12)

Claymation I: July 12-16 CLASS FULL
Claymation II: July 19-23 (9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.) $195
Description: Bring your own characters and stories to life with the
art of clay animation. Using plasticine clay and digital video
animation technology, we will create original short animated films
complete with sound effects and music. Advanced returning students
and students who wish to create a more elaborate claymation film,
and/or to collaborate with friends on a film, are encouraged to sign
up for both weeks, Claymation I and II. Materials fee of $25 payable
to instructor at first class (only one fee required for 2-week
students).

MANGA MOVIE MANIA (ages 10 and up/grades 5-12)

July 26-30 CLASS FULL
Description: Calling all Japanimation junkies! Make your own action-
packed anime cartoons in this drawing-intensive workshop. Learn to
animate like the pros do, with pegbar and lightbox animation,
painted cels and special effects. If you dream of animating ninjas,
fairies or other fantastic creatures, this is the class for you!
Each student will receive a video of the animation created in class.
Materials fee of $25 payable to instructor at first class.

CARTOON CRAFTS: ART THAT MOVES (ages 6-11/grades 1-5)
Dates/Times/Fees:
July 26-30 (9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.): $55
Description: Whirligigs, zoetropes and flipbooks, oh my! In this
hands-on workshop, we will create art that moves, from optical toys
to acrobatic puppets. Students will keep all of their animated works
of art. Materials fee of $15 payable to instructor at first class.

Free Screening/Performance: All of the student animation created in
the summer workshops will be screened for the public in an outdoor
animation festival on Bainbridge Island. Save the Date: Friday,
September 10, 2004 - 8pm

11. NW FILM CENTER ANIMATION CAMPS [Portland, OR]
The NW Film Center continues its summer youth programs with 4
animation workshops taught by Sharon Niemczyk. Offered in

ANIMATION FUN COURSE #021 (GRADES 4-6)

Have you wondered how the pros make cartoon characters come to life?
Through short exercises designed to spark creativity, students will
expand their understanding of how animation motion works and its
potential. This course covers the basics of cartoon cut-out and stop-
motion animation and is an excellent class to prepare students for the
more directed ANIMATION FOR YOUNG PEOPLE class below. Enrollment limit:

ANIMATION FOR YOUNG PEOPLE COURSE # 022 (GRADES 4-6)

Bring your drawings and sculpture to life! Learn about the history
of animation and practice animation techniques with drawings, cut-
outs and flipbooks with a view to completing a short animated film.
No previous experience necessary, though ANIMATION FUN, above, is a
recommended introduction. Please note that on the last day of class
(Friday), students will attend either a morning or afternoon session
for filmming their projects. Families and friends are invited to a
screening of completed work after the class. Enrollment limit: 10.

ANIMATION FOR TEENS COURSE # 024 (GRADES 7-12)

Bring your drawings and sculpture to life! Learn about the history
of animation and practice animation techniques with drawings, cut-
outs and flipbooks with a view to completing a short animated film.

afternoon session for filming their projects. Enrollment limit: 10.
Enrollment in Section 2 is limited to girls. Viva la femme!

ADVANCED ANIMATION FOR TEENS COURSE #026 (GRADES 7-12)
MONDAY-THURSDAY, AUG 9-12, 9 A.M.-noon, PLUS FRIDAY, AUG 13, either
9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. or 1:30-5 p.m.
Make your animated characters talk! Those with previous animation
experience, such as ANIMATION FOR TEENS above, are invited to
further develop their expertise by creating short animated films
with synchronized dialogue and sound effects. Please note that on
the last day of class (Friday), students will attend either a
morning or afternoon session for filmmaking their projects.
Enrollment limit: 10.
