1. MANIA TV CALL FOR FILMS
ManiaTV! a new internet broadcaster, is seeking short films for its "MOP
Premiere Night" - a show dedicated to premiering 5 great films a week.
The films will be scheduled to air for a week, with 1 premiere night and
then re-airing at a different times throughout the week- all published ahead
of time. Note: This seems to be an opportunity for "exposure," not
cash. Investigate for yourself!

2. DONAR ON DVD
Sometimes Seattle resident David Donar has a new DVD of his many
animated short films, available for sale on his web site. David,
who has been living in Toronto and working in Sheridan College's
animation department, will be back in Seattle for the summer, so
be sure to say hello!

3. OTTAWA CALL FOR ENTRIES
Deadline: June 1, 2005
The Ottawa International Animation Festival is now an annual event.
Independent, commercial, and now, student animators working in a variety
of media are invited to submit their entry forms by June 1, 2005, under six
umbrella categories, including commissioned films, independent short
films, student films, films for children, school showreel, feature films,
and new media.

4. SPIKE & MIKE'S SICK & TWISTED FESTIVAL OF ANIMATION [Portland, OR]
Now playing Fri-Sat 11:30pm only
Highlights of this year's festival include a first-ever animated Spike &
Mike introduction, three brand new "Happy Tree Friends" episodes, Kurt
Nellis' "Proper Urinal Etiquette," Christopher Conforti's "Frog," Josh
Prikryl's "Rip Wack," Bill Plympton's "Krazy Kock," Patrick Mallek's "My
First Boner" and Eric Favela's "The Two Minute Itch." Program contains a
whopping 23 all-new films, plus two "back by popular demand" encores:
Breehn Burns and Jason Johnson's "Here Comes Dr. Tran" and Craig
McCracken's "No Neck Joe." Due to the crass and tasteless nature of
these films, no one under 18 will be admitted!

6. CZECH ANIMATION: FAIRYTALES, DREAMS AND NIGHTMARES [Seattle, WA]
April 2-3, 2005
This collection of Czech animation includes a variety of films for
children and adults. The line-up includes:
Sat-Sun - 11:30am
"LITTLE MOLE AND FRIENDS" (70 min), a kid-friendly program
including Zdenek Miller's cute 1960's TV cartoons as well as
some Jiri Trnka and Bretislav Pojar stop-motion classics.
Sat-Sun - 1pm
"STRANGE HAPPENINGS" (75 min), a selection of short
animations for older audiences, including two early stop-
motion pieces by surrealist genius Jan Svankmajer, cut-out
animation by Jiri Barta, and ending with a selection from
the 2002 feature film Fimfarum, a collection of
gloriously twisted fairytales brought beguilingly to life
with puppets and drawings.

"THE EMPEROR'S NIGHTINGALE" a feature film (Jiri Trnka,
1951, Live Action and Puppet Animation, 73 min.)

7. SAKURA CON [Seattle, WA]
April 8-10, 2005
ANCEA is proud to announce the 8th Annual Sakura-Con, the premier
Pacific Northwest Anime Convention devoted to east Asian Culture, with a
particular focus on Japanese animation (anime), Japanese Comics (manga),
and gaming. Sakura-Con is the gathering place of thousands of fans who
get together to have fun sharing their love for anime.

8. IS SEATTLE THE DIGITAL MEDIA HOLLYWOOD? [Seattle, WA]

The WSA's April dinner meeting theme is "Is Seattle the Digital Media
Hollywood?" This networking event will feature guest speakers from Bad
Animals Studios, Dwango Wireless, Gas Powered Games, Monolith and Xbox.

10. THE PDX FILM FESTIVAL [Portland. OR]
April 20-24, 2005
The Portland Documentary and eXperimental Film Festival is a five-day
exposition dedicated to showcasing new innovative works of film and
video. Focusing on non-narrative works that go against the grain of
mainstream entertainment.

11. 24-HOUR COMICS FESTIVAL [Seattle, WA and Vancouver, BC]
On April 23, 2005, cartoonists all over will face the 24 hour comics
challenge. To help these cartoonists, some comic book stores,
educational insitutions, and comics clubs are hosting special 24 Hour
Comics Day events. They provided cartoonists with a space to work,
access to food and drink, and camaraderie. Two of the 67 worldwide
locations are in the Seattle area and one is in Vancouver B.C.

Calling all Japanimation junkies! Make your own action-packed
anime cartoons in this drawing-intensive workshop. Learn to animate like
the pros do, with pegbar and lightbox animation, painted cels and special
effects. If you dream of animating ninjas, fairies or other fantastic
creatures, this is the class for you! Each student will receive a video
of the animation created in class.

- CARTOON CRAFTS: ART THAT MOVES (ages 6-11/grades 1-5)
Description: Whirligigs, zoetropes and flipbooks, oh my! In this hands-on
workshop, we will create art that moves, from optical toys to acrobatic
puppets. Students will keep all of their animated works of art.

- ANIMATION FOR EDUCATORS (adults)
Teachers, librarians and other education professionals will not want
to miss this unique professional development opportunity. In this
intensive 3-day course designed just for educators, you will learn how
to use animation production in the classroom to engage students in learning.
We will cover technology and how to use it, media literacy and and how
animation production can be used to reinforce learning in other content
areas, such as math, science, social studies, language arts and more.
Through hands-on activities, you will learn many projects you can use
and adapt for your own classroom. At the end of the workshop you will take
home our exclusive Animation for Educators packet, complete with lesson
plans, handouts and reference material. You will also receive a DVD copy
of the animation samples we create in class.
