1. ANIMATION EXHIBIT COMING TO OMSI
The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) announced it has partnered
with Cartoon Network for OMSI's new animation international touring exhibit
slated to debut on the science museum's floor in Portland, Oregon, in
October 2005. "Animation," a 6,000-square-foot, highly interactive traveling
exhibition, brings together art, math, science and technology by exploring
the world of animation. The exhibit will showcase popular cartoon
characters and original series from sponsor Cartoon Network. OMSI's unique
exhibit will offer entire families a more complete understanding of it, and
hopefully inspire young people to consider animation as a future career."
Through a series of hands-on exhibits, graphics and videos, visitors will
explore the process of animation and create their own animated sequences. As
they bring their creations to life, they will use math and science concepts
and skills, just as real animators do. A variety of animation tools,
techniques and styles will be explored, including drawings, stop-motion
animation and computer animation. "At OMSI, we know first-hand the
effectiveness of using animation in teaching," explains Vandiver. "For the
past nine years, OMSI has partnered with award-winning animators in
presenting classes that bring out the math and science behind animation.
These classes are among the museum's most popular offerings. There is a
great need for innovative and effective methods of engaging children and
adults in math and science and we believe the multi-faceted 'Animation'
exhibit does just that."

The exhibit s six thematic areas feature concepts important to the field of
animation. In History, visitors learn about early animation and persistence
of vision. In Animation Studio, they learn about the process of animation
and techniques and tools animators use. In Art in Motion, they find out why
art and math are important in the creation of characters, motion and change.
In Science Lab, they explore the science and technology that make animation
possible. Sound and Stage teaches the principles of sound and phonetics. In
Cartoon Museum, visitors view famous animation clips and important artifacts
such as cels, models and storyboard drawings from their favorite animated
television series. Following its world premiere at OMSI, 'Animation' will
travel for approximately eight years first to member institutions of the
Science Museum Exhibit Collaborative (SMEC), a consortium of seven U.S.
science centers, and then to additional science centers and museums
nationwide.

13. OXBERRY ANIMATION STAND WORKSHOP [Seattle, WA]
May 14, 2005 - 10am-6pm
Instructor: Adam Savje Max Attendance: 7
Tuition: $190 WigglyWorld Members / $210 General Public

This all day course will focus on enabling filmmakers to use the Oxberry
Filmaker series animation stand for a myriad of purposes. Basic functions of
the stand will be covered in depth and time permitting advanced techniques
such as bipacking and rotoscoping will be covered. This workshop will be
technical at times, so a basic knowledge of 16mm is required. This is a
hands-on workshop so students will work with the stand directly. Segments of
various films will be shown to illustrate techniques demonstrated.
This course is taught by Adam Savje, who currently is studio manager of the
film department at Massachusetts College of Art. He has worked
professionally at an optical house in New York City and has taught optical
printing, animation and handmade film courses at both the School of the
museum of Fine Arts in Boston and Massachusetts College of Art. He is
currently at work finishing two short 16mm films "Spherical Melancolia" a
16mm colour film about artistic and spiritual melancholy, and "The
Alchemical Reflection" (tentative title) a 16mm B&W film about the conflict
that can manifest between the three different aspects of our consciousness,
set in the archetypal landscape of the "western". He also is gearing up to
begin a 35mm colour, animated film about the evolution of human
consciousness.

14. EXPERIMENTS IN ANIMATION [Seattle, WA]
April 24, May 1, 8, 15, 2005 - 12-3PM
Instructor: Tim Miller Max Attendance: 10
Tuition: $125 WigglyWorld Members / $145 General Public

A basic introduction to animation with the emphasis on experimentation.
Students will be introduced to different animation techniques such as flip
books, camera-less film making, animating under the camera, found object
animation and drawn animation. The goal of this class is for each student to
begin a personal relationship with animation, giving them tools with which
to build and modify their own projects. Different methods of capturing
animation are covered as well as how these can be manipulated to play a
stronger role in the art-making process. The focus of this class is on
animation as an art form as opposed to a technical skills class. Appropriate
for ages 14 and up.

The class will make use of digital animation equipment (camera and computer)
available for rental in WigglyWorld's non-linear edit suite. The class will
not include training on the Oxberry animation stand but skills learned in
this class are applicable with using the Oxberry.

15. AFTER EFFECTS BASICS [Seattle, WA]
May 2, 9, 16, 2005 - 6:30-9:30pm
Tuition: $240 WigglyWorld Members / $270 General Public

AfterEffects is a powerful 2D animation and compositing tool, with a wide
range of applications. Commonly used for film, television and multimedia,
this program can be difficult to crack at first, but once the basics are
mastered, it offers a seemingly inexhaustible depth of possibilities. We'll
be learning, from the ground up, how to combine and manipulate footage,
animate typography, and use other elements to composite visually rich motion
graphics, which can then be output to a variety of formats.
