1. NEW ASIFA-NW REEL
The ASIFA-Northwest Reel is complete! This brand-spanking new DVD reel is
approximately 85 minutes long and includes an inspired collection of work
by Northwest Animators, compiled by ASIFA-Northwest, the animation
association. Thanks to Andy & Amy Collen, Anouck Iyer, Chad Essley and
Brian Maguire of Video Encoding Inc. for all of their hard work in
creating this juried collection of outstanding animated films. This DVD is
NOT available for sale or rental, and is especially for public screenings
only (it will tour other ASIFA chapter locations afetr shows in Portland
and Seattle). So don't miss the screenings this month in Portland (Oct 22)
and Seattle (Oct 23), details and complete film listing under "events"
below. ASIFA-NW members are invited to organize additional local
screenings, such as at a school.

2. VANCOUVER ANIMATOR TO TEACH LABAN IN TORONTO
Leslie Bishko, Computer Animator and certified Laban Movement Analyst will
teach "Laban for Animators: Understanding How Movement is Expressive" in
November at Max the Mutt Animation School in Toronto. The workshop is for
Animators, inbetweeners, character designers, mocap directors, art
directors, game and level designers who work with movement of the human
figure and have a strong interest in pushing the expressiveness of their

3. SEATTLE ANIMATOR ON SLAMDANCE.COM
Seattle animator Bill Ross, creator of "EXTREME" BIBLE STORIES, which can

5. THE ANIMATION SHOW [Seattle, Washington]
Daily through October 9 @ 7:10 and 9:25 Plus additional shows Fri-Sun @
2:20 and 4:45 Even if you missed the sold-out premiere at the Seattle Art
Museum last week, you still have a chance to see the films. The Animation
Show is a collection of the world's best animated short films, personally
programmed by co-producers Mike Judge (Beavis and Butt-Head, King of the
Hill, Office Space) and Academy Award nominated animator Don Hertzfeldt
(Billy's Balloon, Lily and Jim, Rejected). Including films by animators
Bill Plympton, Tomek Baginski, Ruairi Robinson, Koji Yamaura, and Richard
Goleszowski from Aardman Animation. This year's line-up spans eight
countries and features everything from forgotten classics to the very
latest in computer animation, with a trilogy of brand new cartoons by Don
produced exclusively for the show, rare and never-before-seen animation by

7. AN EVENING WITH JOANNA PRIESTLEY [Portland, Oregon]
Saturday, October 4 @ 7:30 P.M
NORTHWEST TRACKING—VISITING ARTIST: Tonight we welcome Portland animator
Joanna Priestley for the world premiere of her new film ANDALUZ (2003),
co-directed with Boston animator Karen Aqua. The two, whose award-winning
work shares a similar spiritual connection, met by chance in a small
village in Andalusia, Spain. They both fell in love with the culture and
spent three years collaborating on this beautiful cinematic valentine that
combines their bright, playful visual styles with a equally evocative
music and sound design created by Lance Limbocker. Along with the new film
will be glorious slides from Spain, a sampling of other of Priestley’s
collaborative film projects, including SURFACE DIVE (2000), also made with
ANDALUZ sound designer Lance Limbocker, THE DANCING BULLRUSHES (1995),
co-directed with Steve Subotnick and CANDY JAM (1988), co-directed with
Joan Gratz, a selection of Karen Aqua’s films including the wonderful
GROUND ZERO/SACRED GROUND (1997), PERPETUAL MOTION (1992) and KAKANIA

8. FIGURE DRAWING WORKSHOP [Seattle, Washington]

These self-directed figure drawing sessions are oriented towards
expression, discovery, and your continued growth as an artist. The models
pose unclothed, clothed, in costume or partially draped on a session by
session basis. Sessions may include guest models, critics, instructors and
artists. Each session is a unique and refreshing opportunity to grow your

9. VIS 2003 CONFERENCE [Seattle, Washington]
October 19-24
The Conference on Visualization, Symposium on Information Visualization
and Symposium on Parellel and Large-Data Visualization and Graphics is a
long fancy name for a get-together of people who are info computer
graphics used for visualization. Highlights include talks by Gordon Bell
and Jim Blinn of Microsoft, workshops, exhibits and interactive
demonstrations such as "Parallel Rendering," "Isosurfaces," and "Haptics
and Physical Simulation." Presented by the IEEE Computer Society Technical
Committee on Visualization and Graphics, in cooperation with ACM/SIGGRAPH.

12. HI/LO FILM FESTIVAL [Seattle, Washington]
Friday, October 24th, 8pm
911 and Killing My Lobster present: What¹s Hi/Lo? Why it¹s a touring film
festival of high-concept low-budget media for adventurous audiences
nationwide. After screening at Rooftop Films in Brooklyn and Subterranean
Cinema in Jacksonville, we had to bring this one to 911. The show includes
some animation films: "I'm With Stupid" (Ben McCormick, San Francisco):
Various inanimate objects - a tortilla, an apple, a glass of orange juice
- confront their fears and plan their future; "Making Love (Out of Nothing
At All)" (Michelle Dean, San Francisco): Animated hot dogs fly through the

13. HANDS-ON ANIMATION INTENSIVE I [Seattle, Washington]
Saturday, December 6, 10am-5pm
In this intensive one-day workshop, you will learn all about the fine art
of frame-by-frame filmmaking in our Hands-On Animation Lab using our Video
Lunchbox system. We will explore various animation techniques, including
cameraless animation, drawing on film, flipbooks, stop-motion, pixelation
and rotoscoping. Bring a bag lunch to eat while we enjoy a screening of
animated films that will introduce you to the fascinating history of
animation. After taking this course you will be certified to rent time in
our animation studio to work on your independent animation projects.

14. AFTER EFFECTS I [Seattle, Washington]
3 Tue., Nov. 11, 18 & 25, 6-9:30pm
Adobe After Effects enables you to produce professional-quality motion
graphics, special effects, title sequences, and animation for integration
into your projects. In these workshops, you will learn to combine video,
audio, still-images, and animations, into simple or complex layered
compositions that can then be output to any film, video, multimedia, or
internet resolution. The skills learned in these classes will help you
take your work to new creative levels. Media will be provided. Class
participants will complete a series of short, simple After Effects tasks
and tutorials. Adobe After Effects I We will cover basic manipulation and
animation of transform controls, masks, basic filter effects, and fully
explore spatial and temporal keyframe control over these animating
properties (including speed and acceleration, bezier curves, keyframe
velocity and influence, and keyframe assistants). Other topics include:
media import and render output methods and options, media editing,
interface switches and controls, efficient working strategies, layer
mattes and layer modes, and key commands. Class limit: 4. Instructor -

Softimage XSI 3D in a day is a one day, six hour, hands-on class for
anyone interested in animation. Pros with a background in other software
as well as those with no 3D experience at all are invited to spend a day
discovering this amazing software. The goal of the day is to create a
simple animated scene, add lights and materials, and render it out to see
it move on screen. Maya 3D in a Day provides 6 hours of hands-on
instruction in Maya, one of the most complex and powerful 3D animation &
special effects software packages available on the planet! The course is
designed to introduce the student to the software, and instill confidence
in the use of this challenging tool. Students will practice manually
setting keyframes on basic objects, adjusting their animation paths in the
graph editor and creating texture nodes in the Hypershade. Tutorials will
take the student through a series of steps to create a scene and animate
it. This is a great class for people looking to understand the basic
