1. CALL FOR ENTRIES: PDX FILM FEST
The PDX Film Festival, April 15-18 2004.
The Portland Documentary and eXperimental Film Festival is a four-day
exposition dedicated to showcasing new innovative works of film and video.
Focusing on non-narrative works that go against the grain of mainstream
entertainment, the PDX Film Festival is looking for artistic, underground,
quirky and challenging work that reflects contemporary culture, documents
historic oddities, and is otherwise generally unclassifiable. Categories:
experimental, documentary, underground. All lengths accepted. Formats:
35mm, 16mm, Beta SP. Preview on VHS or DVD. $15 entry fee. Deadline:

4. THE REAL OLD TESTAMENT [Seattle, WA]

Bill Ross' animated film "Extreme Bible Stories" will be shown along with
the feature film, "The Real Old Testament." This is the story of several
humans who were picked to live in a garden and have their lives taped --
It’s the story of what happens when biblical patriarchs stop being

5. ELF [Everywhere]

This new feature film starring Will Ferrel features a Rankin/Bass-style
animation sequence created by a team including several former Will Vinton

Late Addition. NW FILM & VIDEO FEST [Portland, OR]
November 6-15
A juried survey of new moving image arts by independent Northwest film and
videomakers, the Festival draws over 300 entries in all genres each year
and is judged by a prominent filmmaker, curator or critic. Now in it's
30th year, the Festival provides a forum where outstanding independent
work receives public recognition, critical appraisal and an engaged and
enthusiastic regional audience. Generally, 30-45 shorts, features and
documentaries are screened during the Festival, then 10-15 shorts are
selected for the Best of the Northwest Tour program which travels the
following year throughout the Northwest to media arts centers, museums,
arts councils and universities. This year's program includes films by
animators Trish Van Hussen / Vashon, WA; Chel White / Portland, OR; Bruce
Alcock / Vancouver, BC; Danielle Morgan / Bellingham, WA; David Rimmer /

ANIMATION COURSES & WORKSHOPS

6. HANDS-ON ANIMATION INTENSIVE I [Seattle, WA]
Saturday, December 6, 10am-5pm
In this intensive one-day workshop, you will learn all about the fine art
of frame-by-frame filmmaking in our Hands-On Animation Lab using our Video
Lunchbox system. We will explore various animation techniques, including
cameraless animation, drawing on film, flipbooks, stop-motion, pixelation
and rotoscoping. Bring a bag lunch to eat while we enjoy a screening of
animated films that will introduce you to the fascinating history of
animation. After taking this course you will be certified to rent time in
our animation studio to work on your independent animation projects.

7. AFTER EFFECTS I [Seattle, WA]
3 Tue., Nov. 11, 18 & 25, 6-9:30pm
Adobe After Effects enables you to produce professional-quality motion
graphics, special effects, title sequences, and animation for integration
into your projects. In these workshops, you will learn to combine video,
audio, still-images, and animations, into simple or complex layered
compositions that can then be output to any film, video, multimedia, or
internet resolution. The skills learned in these classes will help you
take your work to new creative levels. Media will be provided. Class
participants will complete a series of short, simple After Effects tasks
and tutorials. Adobe After Effects I We will cover basic manipulation and
animation of transform controls, masks, basic filter effects, and fully
explore spatial and temporal keyframe control over these animating
properties (including speed and acceleration, bezier curves, keyframe
velocity and influence, and keyframe assistants). Other topics include:
media import and render output methods and options, media editing,
interface switches and controls, efficient working strategies, layer
mattes and layer modes, and key commands. Class limit: 4. Instructor -

8. 3D IN A DAY [Seattle, WA]

Softimage XSI - Sat., Dec. 3, 10am-4pm
Softimage XSI 3D in a day is a one day, six hour, hands-on class for
anyone interested in animation. Pros with a background in other software
as well as those with no 3D experience at all are invited to spend a day
discovering this amazing software. The goal of the day is to create a
simple animated scene, add lights and materials, and render it out to see
it move on screen. Maya 3D in a Day provides 6 hours of hands-on
instruction in Maya, one of the most complex and powerful 3D animation &
special effects software packages available on the planet! The course is
designed to introduce the student to the software, and instill confidence
in the use of this challenging tool. Students will practice manually
setting keyframes on basic objects, adjusting their animation paths in the
graph editor and creating texture nodes in the Hypershade. Tutorials will
take the student through a series of steps to create a scene and animate
it. This is a great class for people looking to understand the basic

11. COGSWELL DIGITAL ARTS SYMPOSIUM [Everett, WA]
Nov. 21, 8-10 p.m. and Nov 22, 10 a.m. - noon
The Henry Cogswell College School of Digital Arts will be holding its 7th
Annual Digital Arts Symposium. This year's focus will be on independent
film production, and 2D and 3D animation. Friday evening's session will
feature a showcase of independent films and animation, including some
award-winning work produced by Cogswell College faculty. Saturday
morning's session is entitled "Confessions of an Endangered Species:
Animated moments of achievements and dreams." Tony White, author of the
best-selling "The Animator's Workbook," will present an archive collection
of his award-winning animation, including the British Academy
Award-winning short film, "HOKUSAI - An Animated Sketchbook," the D&AD
Award-winning titles for "The Pink Panther Strikes Again" movie and a
collection of internationally award-winning film extracts & commercials…
spanning a career of over 30 years.  In addition, Tony will show
work-in-progress pencil-tests of his forthcoming short film tribute to
the great classics of 2D animation, "Endangered Species," as well as share
his hopes and dreams for the continued successes of popular 2D animation
in the future. Following the presentation he will be joined by members of
the School's Industry Advisory Board and game industry professionals for a
panel discussion on career opportunities in animation and computer games. 
An open house at the College's Peed Hall, 3002 Colby Ave, will follow the
Saturday session. This will afford the public an opportunity to meet the
program participants as well as tour the College's studios and production
facilities. All events are free and open to the public. Location: The
