1. CALL FOR ENTRIES:NICKTOONS FILM FEST
Deadline: September 10, 2004
Nicktoons is teaming up with Animation Magazine and Frederator Studios for
First-Ever Nicktoons Film Festival, a new program on the new Nicktoons
digital cable network. Films are now being selected for over six hours of
films to be shown starting October 24. Animators from around the world can
download entry forms on www.nicktoons.com and entries will be accepted
through Sept. 10. Submissions should be animated shorts no longer than 7
minutes that combine a unique look, great character designs and a funny
plot. One winner will be chosen by a grand jury and awarded a $10,000
(USD) prize. “There's so much great talent in the world of animation and
we're excited to give people the opportunity to have their work seen by
experts and on Nicktoons’ air,” said Keith Dawkins, Vice President and
General Manager, Nicktoons. “Nicktoons is the place to be for animation
lovers, which is why we're forming a sort of 'creative lab' for a new

2. PORTLAND INDY ANIMATION FEST  [Portland, OR]
August 11-14
The Portland Indy Animation Festival 2004 is a showcase for indie 3D, 2D,
machinima, stop motion, filmed puppetry, interpretations of the art of
animation and even animated trailers for works in progress. Tickets will
be available at the door and are $3 for all venues, except for Holocene
which is $5. Please note that Holocene is a 21+ venue only.

3. ONE REEL FILM FEST [Seattle, WA]
September 3-6
Seattle's mega-arts festival, Bumbershoot, will feature many short films
in the 9th annual One Reel Film Festival. Animation films are peppered
throughtout the themed programs. One program is devoted to animation and
features films by local animators Anouck Iyer of Portland (Hike Hike Hike)
and Gary Parrish of Seattle (It's About Time).
Program info: Saturday Morning Cartoons on Saturday September 4th from 12-1pm.
"Hanna-Barbera. Looney Tunes. Schoolhouse Rock. These shows and snippets
shaped generations. This year, we're attempting the same. Oddball animated
shorts mingle with “educational” messages for the young at heart and the
emotionally immature." Featuring: Rhythm; Heaven's Web; Alphabet Pam; Rich

5. MIXED-MEDIA ANIMATION INTENSIVES WEEKEND [Seattle, WA]

    Animation I In this intensive one-day workshop, you will learn all about the fine art of frame-by-frame filmmaking in our Hands-On Animation Lab using our Video Lunchbox system. We will explore various animation techniques, including cameraless animation, drawing on film, flipbooks, stop-motion, pixelation and rotoscoping. Bring a bag lunch to eat while we enjoy a screening of animated films that will introduce you to the fascinating history of animation. After taking this course you will be certified to rent time in our animation studio to work on your independent animation projects. Class limit: 8 Animation II This class takes off where Animation I ends, delving into additional features of the Video Lunchbox system and exploring advanced animation techniques. The course will cover the use of audio for lip-synch dialogue and animation timed to music and alternative animation techniques such as multi-plane, replacement, sand, paint-on-glass and time-lapse. Bring a bag lunch to eat while we enjoy a screening of animated films that will highlight the course content as well as make parallels between mixed-media and digital animation. Prerequisites: Animation I. Class limit: 8

OREGON3D COMPUTER ANIMATION COURSES [Portland, OR] Ongoing courses in 3D Studio Max, Flint, Flame, Maya, Combustion and other 3D computer animation and visual effects programs. These on-going Saturday-morning workshops are for young animators ages 10 and up.     ADVANCED ANIMATION FOR TEENS COURSE #026 (GRADES 7-12) MONDAY-THURSDAY, AUG 9-12, 9am-noon, PLUS FRIDAY, AUG 13, either 9am-12:30pm or 1:30-5pm. Make your animated characters talk! Those with previous animation experience, such as ANIMATION FOR TEENS above, are invited to further develop their expertise by creating short animated films with synchronized dialogue and sound effects. Please note that on the last day of class (Friday), students will attend either a morning or afternoon session for filmmaking their projects. Enrollment limit: 10. 5 SESSIONS. TUITION: $255 ANIMATION FOR YOUNG PEOPLE COURSE # 022 (GRADES 4-6) SECTION 2: MONDAY-THURSDAY, AUG 16-19, 9am-1pm, PLUS FRIDAY, AUG 20, EITHER 9am-1pm OR 1-5pm. Bring your drawings and sculpture to life! Learn about the history of animation and practice animation techniques with drawings, cut- outs and flipbooks with a view to completing a short animated film. No previous experience necessary, though ANIMATION FUN, above, is a recommended introduction. Please note that on the last day of class (Friday), students will attend either a morning or afternoon session for filmming their projects. Families and friends are invited to a screening of completed work after the class. Enrollment limit: 10. Select one of two identical sections. 5 SESSIONS. TUITION: $255 ANIMATION FUN COURSE #021 (GRADES 4-6) SECTION 3: MONDAY-FRIDAY, AUG 23-27, 9am-NOON Have you wondered how the pros make cartoon characters come to life? Through short exercises designed to spark creativity, students will expand their understanding of how animation motion works and its potential. This course covers the basics of cartoon cut-out and stop- motion animation and is an excellent class to prepare students for the more directed ANIMATION FOR YOUNG PEOPLE class below. Enrollment limit: 10. Select one of three identical sections. 5 SESSIONS (except section 2: 4 sessions) . TUITION: $205
