1. NW FILM & VIDEO FEST CALL FOR ENTRIES
Deadline: August 1, 2005
The 32nd Northwest Film & Video Festival in Portland is seeking submissions
of any length and genre from filmmakers living in Oregon, Washington, Idaho,
Montana, Alaska, and British Columbia. Participants enjoy public
recognition from an engaged and enthusiastic audience and
critical appraisal by our guest judge, a prominent filmmaker,
curator or critic (to be announced).
Selected filmmakers have the chance to appear in the Best of
the Northwest Film & Video Festival Tour and share in over $10,000 in
production service awards.

2. OTTAWA ANIMATION FEST CALL FOR ENTRIES
Deadline: June 1, 2005
The Ottawa International Animation Festival is now an annual event.
Independent, commercial, and now, student animators working in a variety of
media are invited to submit their entry forms by June 1, 2005, under six
umbrella categories, including commissioned films, independent short films,
student films, films for children, school showreel,
feature films, and new media.

3. NICKTOONS FILM FEST CALL FOR ENTRIES
Deadline: June 17, 2005
After a successful first season, with hundreds of entries received from
around the world, Nextoons: The Nicktoons Film Festival returns to
Nicktoons, Nickelodeon¹s digital channel for cartoon hits and independent
animation. Nextoons joins forces again with leading independent cartoon
producer Frederator Studios and will showcase the diversity of animated
filmmaking from across the globe. Seeking shorts, 10 minutes in length or
under, Nextoons: The Nicktoons Film Festival is looking for a large
selection of films created in any style of animation and is currently
accepting entries through June 17, 2005. In its first season Nextoons
awarded filmmakers Mark Simon and Travis Blaise of Orlando, Florida the
$10,000 Grand Prize for their short film, Timmy's Lessons in Nature, a
2D-animated, comedic look at what not to do
when venturing into the outdoors.

This eagerly-awaited new film by animation master Hayao Miyazaki
tells the story of shy young Sophie, who is turned into a
90-year-old woman by the Wicked Witch of the Waste. She seeks
help from the mysterious young wizard Howl, who travels the
country in a castle that moves on metal legs.
Presented in the original Japanese, with English subtitles.

5. ANIMATION DEMONSTRATION FOR KIDS [Seattle, WA]
June 11, 2005 - 2pm
Visit the Seattle Children's Museum to see a live demonstration from Wendy
and Porter Hall of Animated Adventures. Children under 12 are welcome to
come and try making a little animation while learning more about the
animation summer camps being offered at the museum in August. Free with
museum admission.

7. INSIDE THE FAMILY GUY WITH SETH MACFARLANE [Seattle, WA]
June 25, 2005 - 8pm
The genius behind the Emmy-nominated animated series The Family Guy,
Seth MacFarlane built a cult following around the Griffins, a
dysfunctional family whose dog is the smartest of the bunch.
In this event, Seth MacFarlane will take us on a multimedia
adventure inside the Family Guy.
The night will feature stories, videos, and never-before-seen clips.
As the creator of The Family Guy and American Dad and the voice of
many of the characters, MacFarlane is on the cutting edge of animated
television. He takes audiences inside the most raucous, innovative
show on TV for a hilarious behind-the-scenes peek at everything
from the writers’ many neuroses to the only Family Guy episode
that Fox refused to air. Drawing cartoons since his childhood in
Kent, Connecticut, MacFarlane graduated from the Rhode Island
School of Design. His student film there was an 11-minute cartoon
that would eventually turn into The Family Guy. The student film
attracted the attention of Hollywood, and MacFarlane immediately
joined the Hanna-Barbera animation studio. There, he worked
on the cartoon series Johnny Bravo and Cow and Chicken. He also
worked for Walt Disney Animation as a writer on Jungle Cubs and
revised his student script to turn it into Family Guy, which
Fox purchased.

This class will guide you through the animation process,
from sketching and drawing, scanning and coloring, to final
animation, audio, and output. Along the way you will learn
about pacing, framing, storytelling, and the
principles of animation and filmmaking.
12. HANDS-ON ANIMATION INTENSIVE [Seattle, WA]

Course fee includes a total of 5 hours of independent lab time upon
completion of class. In the first half of this workshop you will learn all
about the fine art of frame-by-frame filmmaking using our Video Lunchbox
system. We will sample various animation techniques, including cameraless
animation, drawing on film, flipbooks, stop-motion, pixelation and
rotoscoping. After lunch you will apply what you learn by creating an
animated short film! After taking this course you will be certified to rent
time in our animation studio to work on your independent animation projects.
Webster Crowell is an award-winning stop motion animator and designer.
His work has featured at at NW Film Forum, On the Boards, Consolidated Works
and others. He has received grants from 4-Culture (formerly King county
arts), Artist Trust, NW Film Forum, Jack Straw Foundation and was the first
ever recipient of the
Stranger Genius award for film in 2003. His latest work BORROWING TIME
was featured at this year's Local Sightings Film Festival at the
NWFilmForum.
In addition to filmmaking and teaching, he has worked commercially with
Forrest Pruzan Creative, and advised on many other freelance films and
videos around town. He is also a collector of Bakelite Knobs, and
regularly builds props and sets for film and theater. Currently he
is preoccupied in pre-production on a short film, and also building
his army of rocketmen.

Description: Calling all Japanimation junkies! Make your own

animation, painted cels and special effects. If you dream of
animating ninjas, fairies or other fantastic creatures, this
is the class for you! Each student will receive a video
of the animation created in class.

CARTOON CRAFTS: ART THAT MOVES (ages 6-11/grades 1-5)
Description: Whirligigs, zoetropes and flipbooks, oh my! In this
hands-on workshop, we will create art that moves, from optical toys
to acrobatic puppets.
Students will keep all of their animated works of art.

ANIMATION FOR EDUCATORS (adults)
Description: Teachers, librarians and other education
professionals will not want to miss this unique professional
development opportunity. In this intensive 3-day course
designed just for educators, you will learn how to use
animation production in the classroom to engage students in
learning. We will cover technology and how to use it, media literacy
and and how animation production can be used to reinforce learning in
other content areas, such as math, science, social studies, language
arts and more.
Through hands-on activities, you will learn many projects you can use
and adapt for your own classroom. At the end of the workshop you will
take home our exclusive Animation for Educators packet, complete with
lesson plans, handouts and reference material. You will also receive
a DVD copy of the animation samples we create in class.

CHAOTIC VISIONS: FILMS BY MARTHA COLBURN

A Seattle premiere presented by Northwest Film Forum.
Animation filmmaking artist Martha Colburn returns to Seattle to screen a
selection of her short films including her latest film, COSMETIC EMERGENCY,
which arrives in Seattle fresh from its debut at the 2005 Cannes Film
Festival. As with all the short films in this program, EMERGENCY utilizes
masterful direct animation on a collage of found footage to create a
stunning, utterly unique visual experience. Colburn's work presents a noisy
portrait of our most simultaneously dreadful and beautiful desires. The
program includes a selection of her most recent work, including the Seattle
premieres of such films as A LITTLE DUTCH THRILL and XXX AMSTERDAM.
Martha is a self-taught filmmaker raised in rural Pennsylvania who has moved
from being an underground hero to becoming a world-renowned artist. Her work
has screened at numerous film festivals and art museums including Sundance
and Rotterdam.
